An Aurora signboard with "Why Zuma?" grafitti on it at grootveli mine. Fledgling gold-mining company Aurora Empowerment Systems is in crisis as it fails to pay workers at its Grootvlei gold mine for the third month. It is headed by former President Nelson Mandela's grandson Zondwe and President Jacob Zuma's nephew Kulubese Zuma. The workers hostel has no water due to unpaid bills, and faeces clog the toilets, electricity is sporadic and the miners kitchen has been closed, despite a deduction being taken off for food services.
