28 imagesIn July of 1994, hundreds of thousands of Hutu civilians, FAR soldiers and extremist Hutu militia fled the Rwandan Patriotic Front rebels at the tail end of a genocide that killed between 800,000 and 900,000 Tutsis and Hutu moderates, as well as those of indeterminate ethnicity. The refugees fled to neighbouring Zaire, where the world that had failed to intervene in the genocide, rushed to assist them. The French military even protected those who had taken part in the genocide. It was a shameful time to be a human.
